Since ancient times, humans have wondered: Do I really have control over my life? Or am I just living out a predetermined scenario?
This question is at the heart of the long debate between destiny and free will. Destiny is often associated with something that has been determined—either by God, the laws of nature, or fate written in the patterns of movement of the universe. Meanwhile, free will teaches that humans have the power to determine their own path in life.
But are we really free? Or is everything written before we are born? Or maybe both can coexist?
Destiny in the View of Philosophy and Religion
Many world religions have a strong concept of destiny:
- Islam: Draft Destiny teaches that everything has been determined by God. However, humans are still given the freedom to try and choose.
- Christian: In Christian theology, the concept Providence states that God has a plan for each individual. However, the extent to which humans have freedom in this plan is still debated.
- Hinduism & Buddhism: Draft karma in Hinduism and Buddhism shows that past actions determine one's future. In other words, one's destiny is the result of one's own actions.
Fate is also debated in philosophy, especially in the idea of determinism.
“If one knew the position and velocity of every particle in the universe, one could predict the future perfectly.” – Pierre Simon Laplace
Determinism holds that everything happens according to the inevitable laws of cause and effect. If this is true, then our choices are actually predetermined.
But if everything is written, where is the room for human freedom?
Can We Really Control Our Life?
What is Free Will?
Free will is the idea that humans can choose their actions without coercion from external factors. In other words, we are responsible for our own decisions.
“Man is condemned to be free.” – Jean Paul Sartre
Jean Paul Sartre, an existentialist, believed that humans have absolute freedom. There is no plan or destiny that controls our lives—we ourselves create the meaning and direction of our lives.
However, does this freedom really exist?
The Paradox of Free Will
If our decisions are influenced by genetics, environment, and life experiences, are we truly free? Or is our choice merely an illusion?
Study Nature Neuroscience – Studies in Consciousness and Decisions shows that the human brain makes decisions before we are consciously aware of them. This raises the question: Is free will just an illusion created by our brains?
However, some philosophers argue that despite deterministic influences, we still have some freedom in responding to the circumstances we face.
How Big a Role Do Fate and Free Will Play in Our Lives?
- Biological and Genetic Factors. Many aspects of life are determined by genetics—from intelligence to temperament to risk for certain diseases. But many people have managed to overcome their biological limitations through hard work and a supportive environment.
- Environment and Social Influence. Someone born into a wealthy family may have more opportunities than someone born into poverty. However, history records many individuals who have overcome environmental limitations and achieved success.
- Psychological and Emotional Conditions. The decisions we make are also influenced by our mental and emotional state. When stressed or depressed, a person may make different decisions than when they are happy and stable.
- Chance and Coincidence. It is undeniable that some aspects of life are influenced by luck. Some people are in the right place at the right time to get a golden opportunity, while others have to work harder to get it.
- Personal Choice and Self-Discipline. Despite external factors, we still have freedom in how we respond to situations. Discipline, perseverance, and a willingness to grow can help someone change their life path.
How Do Fate and Choice Play a Role in Our Lives?
- Career and Success: Is success the result of effort or luck?
- Love and Relationships: Is our soulmate predetermined or can we choose our own partner?
- Health and Longevity: Can longevity be worked for, or is everything already written in destiny?
Philosophers' opinions regarding fate and free will also vary:
“Being who we are is a combination of fate and will.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
- Plato: Believe that the world has a rational order, but humans still have free will.
- Aristotle: Teaches that humans have the potential to develop and choose their path in life.
- Nietzsche: States that free will is the power to change fate.
- Schopenhauer: He believes that humans can will, but cannot will their will.
Conclusion: Can Fate and Free Will Coexist?
Fate and free will are not two completely opposite concepts. We may not have absolute freedom, but we still have room to act within the existing constraints.
Perhaps the more important question is not are we really free?, but How can we live our lives with full awareness and responsibility?
Are we controlled by fate or do we have free will? The answer is probably somewhere in between—we have choices, but within established limits. And ultimately, it is how we use the freedom we have that truly determines the course of our lives.
